SAFER Staff Member Named Finalist for Howard R. Swearer Humanitarian Award

NEW ORLEANS, LA: May 5, 2008

SAFER Resource Manager and Co-Facilitator Laine Frey was recently named a finalist for the prestigious Howard R. Swearer Humanitarian Award. The Swearer Award, which is awarded to five students nationally each year, “recognizes students for their innovative strategies in addressing community issues and needs, and their efforts to build and sustain this work among their peers and within their institution.”1 Frey began as a volunteer with SAFER in 2006 and is now a full-time staff member of the organization as well as a full-time third-year student at Tulane University. As an AmeriCorps volunteer, Frey is contracted to work 1700 hours over a period of 10 months. She is currently in the process of completing her second AmeriCorps term, and also serves on the Tulane Student Government and as a service scholar mentor. Since Frey began work with the organization, SAFER volunteers have helped over 90 families remove flood debris from their houses and an additional 15 families rebuild their homes.
